All life is dependent on the ocean. Three quarters of world’s surface is covered by the ocean. It regulates our climate and produces half the planet’s oxygen and food. The ocean’s ferocity has rewritten maps and wiped out entire populations in seconds. Just one average hurricane produces 200 times the total electrical generating capacity on the planet. Yet in an age where mankind has landed on the Moon and Mars, conquered Everest, and discovered the building blocks of the universe, we know surprisingly little about the workings of this limitless power source. Only recently has the Ocean’s Power been named as the culprit in the disappearance of an alarming amount of bulk carriers, due to a newly discovered phenomenon known as Rogue Waves - waves 100 feet and beyond that break without warning. Given that the ocean plays the lead role in mitigating climate change, and is now warming at a rate of 5 atomic bombs per second, the race to unlock her secrets has never been more crucial.
Oceans Power will highlight these forces of nature while following two contrasting subsets of people: The shipping industry with its unlimited budgets, scientists and elite marine salvage and rescue teams, racing to understand why the ocean's power is increasing; in order to save lives and prevent an increasing number of oceanic disasters. And the stars of the big wave surfing community, with their unique knowledge of wave’s formation, forecasting and power, who see waves 100 feet and beyond as the ultimate conquest. Each will learn from the other to help unlock these secrets.
Think BBC’s Blue Planet meets the Delta Force of Marine Salvage and Big Wave Surfing.
