Philip Boston was born in Cape Town, South Africa and raised in a small town three hours south of Perth in Western Australia. Very active in the arts growing up, Boston studied at the Mount Lawley Academy of Performing Arts in Western Australia. He spent several years as a highly praised production designer in commercials and music videos before making the natural transition into directing.
Boston's work as a director has won multiple awards in numerous categories, Clio’s, Promax and Telly’s. He has been labeled as a 'Filmmaker to Watch' in Shoot Magazine. In addition to being a successful commercial director, Boston has also worked as a 2nd unit director shooting action sequences for some of Hollywood's biggest motion pictures, having recently completed action units for Chasing Mavericks & Point Break.
Boston's interest in directing started in front of the camera as an actor on the set of a Tony Scott commercial featuring Sharon Stone. Meeting Scott made such a lasting impression on him that he left acting to pursue a career in directing film.
Boston's career behind the camera started out in the art department, his keen eye for direction and design helping him quickly climb the ranks to the role of production designer. Within a very short time, Boston was designing spots for clients such as Nike and Dunlop and art directing music videos for Mandy Moore, DMX, Ice Cube, Genuine, Will Smith and Britney Spears. During this time Boston also art directed two motion pictures and a television series.
While art directing, Boston began shooting spec commercials and his turn for direction did not go unnoticed. His efforts led to interest from Quentin Tarantino and Lawrence Bender's production company to which he was soon signed on as a commercial director. Soon after, he was noticed by executives at Warner Brothers and hired to direct the feature film documentary "Billabong Odyssey". The film went on to achieve worldwide acclaim from international critics and audiences alike and is credited with being one of the top 10 most influential environmental films of all time.
Since directing "Billabong Odyssey", Boston has directed campaigns for clients as wide ranging as Samsung, Hornitos, Do It Yourself Network, ABC, Atari, Nike, Energizer, Red Bull and Garmin amongst others.
As well as directing commercials, Boston has also helped create and produce a wide range of award winning campaigns for clients such as Samsonite, Levis, Red Bull, Hornitos, ABC Television and DIY.
